Kodaly counting is a terrific way to introduce rhythm reading to young students. It is a good idea to use both the General Music image recognition units and the Kodaly counting material alternately. There are several reasons for such a strategy:
- Develop vocabulary in young students
- Assist with language development for bilingual students
- Develop verbal fluency (especially with faster speeds)
- Help students realize that music reading and reading are very similar
- Prepare for a secondary transition to an "adult" counting system using beat numbers
- Both the General Music material and the Kodaly counting material are lots of fun.
